This intricate design has a long story: its entirely based off of the the Spanish Synagogue in Prague's Jewish Town which was designed by Vojtech Ignac Ullmann and Josef Niklas in 1868. It was inspired by Moorish Revival style and was built over the site of the 12th-century Altschul ("The Old School"), the oldest synagogue in the Prague ghetto. This Synagogue's specific design was also based on the Leopoldstadt Temple in Vienna, which was destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938. During World War II, this synagogue stored Jewish property confiscated by the Nazis.

I visited this synagogue in March 2024 and was blown away by the architecture and design as I had never seen a synagogue in this Moorish style. So when I decided to design our Ketubah, I immediately I wanted create something to match the interior of this synagogue. The beauty in this synagogue was captivating and still takes up space in my mind that we are so lucky it survived until the present day. After three months of reconfiguring the design to match the style of our circular Ketubah, and after many failed attempts, a finished product was made, but we decided that although it was beautiful, it wasn't the right fit for us and I started over making an entirely different Ketubah...

Since then I've wanted to recreate this design but due to its complexity it was only finished in late 2025. I painted this entirely with indigo watercolor using a 00 size brush and due to its small size it was extremely difficult. I'm very proud of this specific painting and hope one day that I'll be able to recreate it as a large painting for our future home.
