Pomegranate Peace Print
This painting represents the various aspects of Israeli and Jewish society. The olive branches, part of the emblem of Israel, symbolize peace. The color choice of the State of Israel was made to resemble to Jerusalem stone that is found all over the city.
The red anemone (kalanit) flowers, the national flower of Israel, are found in fields all over the country and are especially famous in the areas around the Gaza border. Many of these fields were razed to the ground during October 7, but even then the people from the kibbutzim, with the help of strangers from around the world, replanted the kalanit flowers. They embody our country's resilience. Nowadays, in Re'im at the Nova Music Festival site, these flowers have been planted for each victim and art installations, like the Tears of Kalaniyot, have been built around the area. These flowers carry so much weight but also so much hope that whenever I see them they invoke new emotions.
Finally, the pomegranate symbolizes life, fertility, love, and the 613 mitzvot. As one of the seven species native to Israel it is also a symbol of the ancient connection to the Land (olives being another).
Most interestingly, in Hebrew the word of pomegranate, rimon, also means grenade (because of their resemblance to pomegranates). These fruits took on new meaning after October 7. They now remind me of the sacrifices people made on that day for the ones they loved. Many saved other people's lives by literally jumping on grenades to sacrifice themselves. So while the rimon brings destruction, it also brings resilience. I hope this piece speaks to you in some of the ways that it spoke to me.
